Fed Reduces Interest Rates for Second Instance This Calendar Year During Economic Uncertainty

The US monetary authority cut borrowing costs on midweek, marking the second reduction in the current year during financial volatility stemming from the government closure and tariff policies.

Move Comes at Extraordinary Moment for Central Bank

The move to cut the key rate by a 0.25% to a range of 4% to 3.75% comes at an extraordinary juncture for the central bank. The institution has been under immense pressure to cut rates despite ongoing price increases.

Central Bank Announcement Notes Labor Market Shifts

In a statement, the Fed said that the unemployment rate had increased but stays modest. “Employment growth have slowed,” the statement notes. “Price increases has risen and stays moderately high.”

Federal Closure Complicates Central Bank’s Task

The ongoing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Gathering of important economic data has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the closure.

Information Shortage Impacts Policy Decisions

The Fed typically studies labor statistics to assess labor market conditions, including the count of employment gains added to the market and the current unemployment rate. The last jobs report was released in the beginning of last month, before the shutdown, and gave a relatively bleak overview of the employment scene in August.

The figure of jobs created to the market in August was lower by more than 100,000 since the spring, and joblessness crept up to four point three percent – the peak since 2021.

Private Data Indicate Ongoing Slowdown

Though BLS was set to publish September’s job market report in the start of last month, it suspended its publication once the closure began. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor indicated earlier this month that the private sector cut thirty-two thousand jobs in last month, a sign that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.

“Supply as well as demand for workers has declined significantly,” Fed chair the Fed chairman stated recently, which he had earlier attributed stems from immigration and tariff policies.

Price Data Reveals Gradual Rise

Though BLS’s employment data has been paused, the bureau still issued its price statistics for last month that showed that costs are going up, albeit slowly. Costs increased 3% over the past twelve months, the highest since January. In April, the yearly price increase was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since 2021. The Fed’s target price increase is two percent.
