Guitar Hero Turns 20 – The Plastic Guitar That Connected Generations Among Rock Generations

Marking 20 years after the legendary game hit the market in North America, providing players everywhere the means to feel like rock legends. Not in reality, but try convincing anyone who has mastered the epic four-minute guitar solo in front of a packed crowd of friends.

Developed by Harmonix, the game provided users with a guitar-shaped controller to match on-screen cues moving along the screen synchronized to the music. Every sequence mimicked particular chords, producing the sensation of an authentic live show.

The studio had already tried its hand with rhythm games before partnering with the publisher, later acquired by the gaming giant in 2006. Together, they laid the groundwork for a surprising billion-dollar series that had a remarkable impact for many musicians included, showcasing classic bands to millions of younger players.

A former executive, ex-chief operating officer from the developer, recalls the early financial challenges of licensing the songs – despite the fact the first two games mostly used cover versions.

“We reproduced all the music because the dollar figure prohibitive,” he explains. “Despite having the publishing rights by themselves, it was extremely difficult. We couldn’t get bands like the Who – RedOctane was operating on a shoestring budget, and we were fairly certain it would fail. However, when Guitar Hero became a hit, and record sales airtime increased, all artists desired to participate.”

He adds: “One of the remarkable aspects was how many mothers and fathers reached out and thanked us for exposing their kids to the music they adored. It evolved into a multigenerational phenomenon.”

Classic Rock Finds Younger Fans

Irish group one featured act had their track in the 2008 release Guitar Hero World Tour. Lead musician the artist remembers how the series brought older hits to the forefront: “The game offered a bigger, younger audience. Typically this had been seen as music that was past it, however once it got included in the game young people were finding it, suddenly it was cool. That legitimised the genre, and got rid of the outdated label. It provided our catalog renewed popularity.”

In 2008, the Answer’s first record remained unreleased in the US, so Guitar Hero was a key medium of discovery for the group during their a North American tour opening for the rock giants. “The roadies had on the song during travel, and several knew us thanks to the game,” he notes.

Major Band Titles and Lasting Influence

Rock’s biggest acts quickly capitalised on the series’ popularity, including bands like Aerosmith, Metallica and Van Halen featuring in specialized game editions centered around their music collections and related stories, visuals and legendary status. In the case of, Guitar Hero: Aerosmith, reportedly to have made the band greater revenue than any of their studio albums. It moved more than half a million copies in its first week, while demand for Aerosmith’s music rose of up to 40% during an era as the industry was already collapsing.

Guitar Hero continues to inspire nimble-fingered dedication within the community. Earlier this year, a streamer completed an impressive attempt of DragonForce’s the challenging track – an infamously tough anthem made popular by Guitar Hero – on Clone Hero, a no-cost alternative with almost identical mechanics and extensive customisation options. The song is difficult even in the hardest setting, not to mention played at double speed while hitting every one of the thousands of cues. They claimed requiring nine months to accomplish.

“The game offers a, imaginary experience. If you play other games, that doesn’t mean you ought to pick up a real gun and go to war,” says musician Herman Li.

The band had already wrapped up a profitable run when Through the Fire and Flames appeared in the third game, but Li says it turned them into widely recognized. “I remember the record label calling to tell me that our selling albums like crazy,” he shares. “Popularity surged when we next toured, and we performed right ahead of the headliners on the Mayhem festival.”

Indeed, the band's visibility via the game was so immense that it has threatened to eclipsing everything else accomplishments. Recently, the song was used in a trailer for Despicable Me 4. “Previously I thought differently, but I’ve made peace with it,” he admits. “If you only hear a single track, that's fine – each person has their own musical journey and I'm pleased we played a role in fans' experiences”.

The Lasting Legacy from the Iconic Controller

The best promotion, be it for automobiles, clothes or games, goes further than selling something – it evokes a desire. Was the game able to harness this? “Precisely what our team aiming to achieve,” Dornbrook says. “The excitement of performing as a rock star on the stage. From day one, the creators felt that there’s an instinctive human desire to make music, and their goal was to use technology to enable everyone to do it”.

Most of Guitar Hero games were released in just a five-year period from 2005 to 2010, featuring derivative titles like DJ Hero, including a turntable controller, and Band Hero. Subsequently, corporate focus in plastic instruments died down, aside from a short-lived revival several years later.

Games such as the fan project and Fortnite Festival have maintained the community alive, and there’s set to be something from the founders on the way. Recently formed developers has entered production on their first music game. The initial creators are participating in advisory roles. Are gamers prepared to welcome another game in the spirit of the classic?

“Our team believed those games might become similar to sports games allowing annual update every year,” Dornbrook says. “There’s so much fresh tracks it could remain perennially popular, so I’ve always been hopeful. There’s no reason for it to continue for future fans.”
