The defendant confessed to 17 criminal counts at Leicester Crown Court on Friday

A person who spiked sweets with tranquilliser and gave them to minors at a summer program in Leicestershire has admitted sexual offenses against two young males aged nine and 10.

Jon Ruben was taken into custody after eight youngsters and an older person experienced illness at the facility in mid-summer.

The elderly man, from the Nottinghamshire area, confessed to a multiple criminal counts when he was present at Leicester Crown Court on the end of the week.

However, he refused to admit one of the sexual offences he was accused of, which was concerning a nine-year-old child.

The accused was held in detention prior to a further hearing on late November.

'Treat game'

The legal representative, handling the case, outlined the criminal behavior to the judicial body.

She stated his those affected were under-privileged children who were staying at a summer camp which he operated.

The man engaged in a "candy game" with the children, Mrs Prior said, in which he would go into the children's bedrooms when they were getting ready for bed and tell them to ingest treats "as fast as possible".

She informed the proceedings the defendant had played this game with the boys "over an extended period", and children had earlier experienced illness the next day.

She said the man had been successful in rationalizing this over a long period as the minors being "overwrought by enjoyment", until his stepchild had suspicions in recently.

The prosecutor added: "Recently" his family member had suspicions about the activities, justifiably.

"They resolved" to examine in the defendant's belongings."

Mrs Prior KC stated objects including lubricant, petroleum jelly and injection devices were found, and his family member alerted the law enforcement about his suspicions.

She said Ruben proceeded to conduct the "candy game" with six boys that time - Saturday 26 July - and they were all ill the subsequent day.

"The police had not responded by that time," she added.

The regulatory agency, the Independent Office for Police Conduct, had stated that it was reviewing law enforcement's management of the events.

The legal representative said the children were unable to walk properly due to their sickness, so the stepson notified the law enforcement a second time.

She said Ruben then played the "candy game" in a space of five minors.
