Larian Studios Announce a Fresh Divinity, Labeling it Their Biggest RPG to Date

The buzz surrounding The Game Awards reached a fever pitch, notably after presenter Geoff Keighley posted an enigmatic image of a desert monolith. The mystery is finally answered. The acclaimed developer is working on a brand-new Divinity game.

Revealed to be Divinity, the game was showcased with a bold trailer that included striking imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to scenes of revelry and the literal opening of infernal gates.

Not the Expected Sequel

Anyone expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, that is not happening. Larian warned that a third Original Sin game to its critically acclaimed RPGs is not currently in development.

Nevertheless, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a continuation of the core franchise. This distinction hints that the team could be crafting a real-time experience as opposed to another turn-based title. At this moment, this is speculation, as only a cinematic trailer is available.

The Legacy of Divinity

The Divinity series is widely praised and arguably it pioneered the recent resurgence of crunchy computer role-playing games. These games are celebrated for detailed worlds, branching plots, and deep class systems—qualities that later reached new heights in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its setting is classic fantasy, what makes Divinity apart is the immense freedom granted to the player.

Where many modern RPGs have streamlined options, Divinity is brimming with niche playthroughs that are viable with a particular class or origin with a unique decision path.

The series is also wonderfully open-ended, enabling players to find creative solutions both in story and combat. Nearly every quest can be completed in multiple ways, sometimes in lateral fashion.

  • You might progress the story because you heeded something an animal companion shared.
  • Or, you could defeat a foe by using the world itself in a inventive way.

The Journey Continues

It is this design philosophy that have cemented the series to label games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as a top-tier role-playing games in history. Now, the RPG community can look forward to a new entry in this groundbreaking franchise.
